Writing a story in serial form

For some reason I thought the idea of posting a story on my blog was a good idea.

Since the story was long, the obvious thing to do was break it up in parts and post it in serial form, which, I thought, was another great idea.

But my experience with the story I posted ( The Bank Robbery) tells me otherwise.

The reason could either be that the story I wrote was not good enough to compel the reader to go back to the start and follow the story to the end, or it could be that the idea of writing a story in serial form on a blog is not a good idea.

I think a better way to showcase your writing on your blog is to have a separate page for it. What do you think?

"How To…"

There is something about “how to” books that grabs the reader’s attention and makes him want to buy the book. I think my first “how to” book was named ” How to become a writer?”

Needless to say, that book did not help me a lot. Was it because the book was not good or because I was too young to understand it then, can be debated. But, the book was not a complete waste of money.

At that time whatever I wrote was in long hand. The book said if you are aspiring to be a writer you should have a word processor, or at the least a typewriter. Since buying a computer was not even a option, I began to look for typewriters.

I began to save my pocket money in the hope of buying a typewriter.  Every time I saw an advertisement in the paper for a typewriter, my eyes would be filled with a deep yearning. Of course, I couldn’t tell about my desire to my parents because writing to them was merely, “a waste of time”.

The Bank Robbery XVI – The Escape

Rahul had no other option but to follow him and he did. For a while the road got worse and the vegetation became denser. Rahul was having a really hard time walking with the weight of the bag on his shoulders and avoiding tripping on the roots of the trees that were exposed, here and there. Vikas although seemed to have no problem in making his way among the dense vegetation. But after about fifteen minutes and another right turn, the road began to slope down and got easier to walk on. After about another twenty minute’s brisk walk, the main highway became visible again and the two men were soon on it.  

“ So, will we get a bus from here… and where are we?” Rahul asked.  

Vikas was still smiling and kept walking. Even I was intrigued now, and followed them with great curisoity. On the highway , Vikas got near the a car that had been covered with a tarpaulin sheet. Judging by the dust on the cover, it seemed that the car had been parked there since the last few weeks. Vikas uncovered it, and took out the keys to the car from his pocket, and with a smile he said, “ Here is our ride home.”  

Rahul’s face could not hide hisamazement. “How and when did you do this?” he asked.

A Global English

Thanks to the Internet, English has become one of the most written, if not spoken, language in the world. And from the way things are going it can be safely assumed that the use of English is only going to increase in the years to come.

A few years ago, there were only two major varieties of English – the British  and the  American. Given the fact that most of the world has been a British colony at some point of time or another, it is not surprising that countries like India, south Africa etc. were predominantly using British English, and occasionally spicing it up with bits and pieces of the native language.

Thus, in addition to the two major varieties of English, a few other variants began to develop. But, then came computers, and the Internet, and things changed altogether.

Finding a niche…

As I said in one of my previous posts, if someone has more than one blog it is important for them to identify a niche for each of the blogs. Otherwise it is easy to become confused as to what one is going to post on the different blogs.

Once confusion sets in, many other problems follow. 

Identifying a niche is also helpful as it gives you a rough outline around which you can  develop your post. There are certain things that you write about, and then there are others that you don’t. Once you have that defined, coming up with the posts becomes a little less difficult.

A niche is good for the readers too because they know what to expect when they come to your blog. If it is something that is of interest to them, they would like to subscribe to your blog or bookmark it. If not, they will move on.

This blog has been in existence for almost an year now, but till now I have not been able to decide a niche for it, but I think that is a thing of the past. Because, now, I have decided that it will be possible to continue this blog only if a niche is defined for it. And I have defined it…

What it is, is something that you will have to figure out for yourself in the days to come.  I am sure it will not be hard to figure it out!
