Writing, Among Other Things

Is a blog that doesn't update still a blog?

The definition of a blog has changed quite dramatically over the last few years. From being an amateur, the blog has come a long way, and it is now impossible to differentiate a website from a blog.

A criteria often used to separate the blogs from the websites is the frequency of updation. A website, they say, is more static in nature as compared to a blog.

For example, a company’s website could talk about  its area of operations, client-base,  employees etc. The website would only need to be updated when there has been some major development in the company. A blog, by the very same company, could talk about something like the new coffee machine, boss’s new tie, the new pizza place near the company’s premises. In short, it would be dealing with the interesting things (or not so interesting things) that happen on any average day in the company.

So, if frequency of updation is the criteria by which you judge a blog, how often should a blog be updated? How often do you update yours? And if a blog hasn’t updated for a long time (the definition of a long time is again subjective), do you call it a website, or a dead blog?

Some changes on the Blog

Change is the law of nature. This statement is especially true for the blogosphere, where new ideas and concepts come up every day. Some stay and flourish, while others fizzle out and are soon forgotten.

Bloggers have to keep in touch with the latest trends and make changes on their blogs accordingly. So, in line with what has happened in the blogosphere lately, I have made a few changes to my blog too.

  • The Blogrush widget, that had been occupying the top spot in the side bar, has been moved down the order. I thought about taking it off the blog, but on second thoughts I let it stay as I have come across some good blogs through the widget. But Blogrush has been a disappointment considering the momentum it had gained on account of it’s explosive opening.
  • Entrecard, the new kid on the block, has been given the top spot on the side bar. The reason for that is that the entrecard widget has been sending in consistent traffic, despite the fact that I have not made any real effort to get traffic from there. I think I am going to do that now, and getting the entrecard widget on top is the first step in that direction.
  • I had been using a couple of referral programs for the last few months, but they have not produced any results. So, off they have come too.
  • Google Adsense is back on the blog. After experimenting with a couple of ways to make money – without affecting the blog – I have come to feel that Google Adsense is still one of the best ways to do it. So, the google ads are back again, until I can find a better alternative.

That is about it…at least for now.
