Writing, Among Other Things

One or many…Many or one?

One or MAny

This is one question that almost every blogger comes across as soon as the first blog is a few months old. The reason for starting a new blog could be a new idea that or a newly registered domain name.

But, I often wonder if it is a good idea to have many blogs or should a blogger restrict him/herself to just one blog.

I faced the question for the first time when I decided to have a blog on my own domain. At that time the question I faced was : should I move my existing blog from blogger to here, or should I start a new one? After deliberating on the question for a while, I finally chose to start a new blog, and keep the old one too.

Now, almost an year into my new blog, I think I have an answer to the “many or one” question.

As a writer, I strongly recommend having ONLY one blog. Having more than one blog will divide your attention, and will make you lose focus. It is much better to have pages, or categories, that deal with the different subject matters that you are blogging about.  This will make it easier for you to manage things,  and you can have a diverse audience for your blog. Moreover, with multiple blogs, posting on blogs might become erratic at times, and thus you are not able to build an audience on any of the blogs.

The only condition where it is advisable to have multiple blogs is where there are different and well-defined niches for each of the blogs. For example, someone who wants to have a  personal blog and a professional blog is better off having two blogs than one. If you are going to have two or more different blogs, you should have a very clear idea of what you are going to be posting about on each of the blogs.

But, like most things in blogging, there is no universal answer to the “many or one” question,  and each blogger  has to answer this question for himself or herself.

How many blogs do you have?

If a blogger focuses on content more than money, one blog is definitely the way to go.

One blog is enough for me, lately, but I am trying to stick to a specific niche. If I start another, it will be for another specific subject, but that won’t be until I’ve got a firm grasp on the first blog.
