For some reason I thought the idea of posting a story on my blog was a good idea.
Since the story was long, the obvious thing to do was break it up in parts and post it in serial form, which, I thought, was another great idea.
But my experience with the story I posted ( The Bank Robbery) tells me otherwise.
The reason could either be that the story I wrote was not good enough to compel the reader to go back to the start and follow the story to the end, or it could be that the idea of writing a story in serial form on a blog is not a good idea.
I think a better way to showcase your writing on your blog is to have a separate page for it. What do you think?
HI, I also have serialized stories. I did one 2 years ago and one in October and currently working on one. To be honest I would like to think the people are coming back for more but truthfully I have no idea that they are. I think it is a good idea but that is because I do it. The only thing I do is advertise it a little more and then when I am done with the story I will do a link roundup. There is a writer I have seen through entrecard that writes a serialized story and she includes links from previous sections prior to the installment.
I’ve been writing a novel and releasing it as I go on my blog for a while now. (41 Chapters and counting)
I make sure to put a link at the end of every chapter to the next one (as soon as it’s released), a link at the top of every chapter to the first chapter, as well as a main page for the story that has links to every chapter.
After I got a good schedule down and kept it for a while, my traffic has steadily growing. Not that it’s a lot of traffic, but still a lot better than before schedule…
I know of a few other genre writers that are doing similar things, with various degrees of success.
I think that longer works stand a better chance of having this work, as it becomes more possible to get “momentum” for the work.
I think it can work, and it woul certainly go better then posting the entire thing. I would not do it because I am not yet good enough to expect dedication and I do not want to sell it as much as I would need to to make up for my lack of skill. But it can work.
I’ve done this on my creative writing blog and had an increase in traffic, as well as having people go back to read from the beginning on a frequent basis. I found it a good tool for increasing readers.
If you’re going to post something of significant length on your blog, the way you chose to do it is the best way, in my opinion.
Most blog readers don’t seem to be interested in reading posts of significant length. Those who are interested are going to read it no matter how you post it.
So, I guess the best thing to do is try out each method with your readers and see what type of audience you have.
Apparently I wasn’t the only one thinking about this. I am not a professional writer or anything but I fondled with the idea of writing. Perhaps when I have more free time…
