Writing, Among Other Things

Write your best post

Before you read any further,  take a moment’s break to think about the post that you think is one of the best that you ever wrote.

Now, where was this post written?

I think, more likely than not, the seeds of that post were sown in your mind when you were no where near a computer. You might  be with your friends, or family, or maybe just alone talking a walk, or doing whatever it is that you like to do.  Then you get an idea and you think – you know- you are going to blog about it. The idea begins to take  shape till you can almost see it as a blog post.

When you finally write it down, it is like giving the final touches to your work of art.

For example, one my better posts Writer’sBlock – A System’s Approach  was written in my mind long before I actually posted it.

So, what I am trying to say here is that the secret of writing great posts does not lie in sitting on your computer all day long, but getting away from it as much as you can.

A Conspiracy

It looks like time, work and the month of November are conspiring to prevent me from getting to my target of 50,000 words for NaNoWriMo this year.

What is worse is that the conspiracy seems to be working. It is day 13 and my word count stands at a dismal 3,300. I really hope that all of you out there are doing better than that. Actually, I hope you are doing much better than that.

But, I also think all is not lost for me either. There are 17 days to go and about 46,700 more words to write. That means I have to write about 2, 750 words every day from today till the 30th, and my task will be done.

The Bank Robbery – VI

(This is the sixth part of the series that began here . If you like it,  and would want to be updated whenever I post the subsequent parts, you might want to subscribe to the posts via email

“I am all for it. I think it can be done, I was paying more attention today, and there is no security, we can easily haul in the money and run,” Ramesh began.

“And run where? we are no robbers or criminals,” Vikas said, a little irritated.  “What do you think Rahul?”

“I think your plan is the best, we can take Ramesh’s help to fill in the details and then act. But I noticed that we have only twenty days to figure out everything, otherwise the money will be gone and all will be in vain.”

“Yes…twenty days, but twenty days are more than enough.”

“Ok! here is the final plan then”, Vikas continued, “Rahul and me will leave this place a few days before the actual day… we are away often so it won’t rouse any suspicion. On the day we won’t be able to contact each other, neither will we try…so everything has to be very well planned. On the day, we meet at some place, possibly looking as different from our usual self as we can, just passing by through this area, then we will wait at that blind curve near the village. I chose that point because it’s not in sight and in that area there is no cell phone signal. Ramesh, you get them to leave a little late somehow… that can be easily done, I think… then  you have to get the telephone exchange down. It’s not  something that has not happened before, so they will not be too worried about it. The best way to do it would  be to somehow cut the electric supply of the exchange. They don’t have back up so as soon as the lights go out, the phones go out; If we are lucky the power will be out as it is on that day.

NaNoWriMo (Day 5)

It is the end of day 5 of NaNoWriMo, and I have hardly crossed the 1667 words deadline. So, I have fallen behind by four days. Bad, but not a lost cause yet.

I have been checking up on the NaNoWriMo site frequently and this year it seems to me that the site is a bit slower than last year. Maybe it is because of a larger number of people signing up for NaNo this year. But, one thing that I am really surprised by is that the word count API is still not working and neither are the word count widgets. Last year, I remember it was fun to see those widgets on people’s site, and know how they were doing with their novels.

The announcement on the front page of NaNo says that they are going to start working on them as soon as possible. I hope that they get the widgets to work real soon as 5 days of NaNo have already gone, and only 25 days of fun remain.

How are you doing with NaNo this year?

(P.S. – If you are here for the Robbery story, check back soon as I will be uploading the next part of the series very soon)
