Writing, Among Other Things

NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month

NaNoWriMOIt is that time of the year again!

To tell you the truth, I was completely taken by surprise when the email from Chris Baty came. It was just a reminder that NaNoWriMo 2007 is almost here.

What is NaNoWriMo?

If you know the answer to this question you can skip reading this part? If you don’t, then continue reading.

In very few words NaNoWriMo is an attempt by all participants to start writing, and finish, a 50,000 words novella in one month i.e. from November 1 to November 30.

What do you have to do?

They say all of us have a book inside us. And I am sure most of us at different times have thought about writing our book, but reasons varying from lack of time to lack of skill have stopped us from realizing our novel-writing dream. If that has been the case with you, then maybe it is time to take up the challenge and try doing it. You have nothing to lose.

My Experience

I read about NaNoWriMo in Reader’s Digest a few years back. Since then, year after year, I visited the site but never registered because I was not sure if I could do it. Then, last year, I decided to do it.

I had no idea what I was going to write about but I just wanted to complete the challenge of 50,000 words. In fact, some of the stories that I have put up on this blog are a part of the novella I wrote for NaNoWriMo last year.

I tried to keep a schedule, but , as usually happens with me, I fell behind and I still remember the frantic typing of last day when, on November 30th, I wrote about 7,000 words to complete the challenge.

This Year ?

Though, the month of November this year is going to be a busy one fore me, with two of my friends getting married around that time, yet I hope that I can participate and complete the challenge this year too.

I hope you are participating too. Are you?

    Hey, good luck with NaNoWriMo!

    I signed up yesterday too.

I signed up to NaNoWriMo yesterday. It’ll be my second year and I’m really excited about starting a new project.

I just signed up today and this will not only be my first year with NaNoWriMo, but my first novel as well. I don’t know how I’ll manage it, I’m a grad student in English and I have a full time job, so it will be a challenge. I think it’s going to take about 1667 words a day.

I’m going to be getting up earlier to write, and am working on the “concept” right now. I may have it plotted out before November 1 so I know where I’m going as soon as I sit down to write.

That approach seems more comfortable. What method did you use last year?
