Are You Losing Blogging Steam?

It has been more than a month since I have updated this blog. This is not good as this was definitely not what I had wanted for this blog. Of course, I always knew that I would never be like many other bloggers, who make it a point to blog atleast once every day. Yet, I had also not thought that things would come to such a pass that I would not have a posted in over a month.

Something tells me that I am not the only one who is in a position like this. I see many blogs on the Internet that start off very well, but begin to lose steam in a while, and are eventually given up. Why is it that many bloggers find it easy to keep blogging over a period of time, while others find it very difficult to continue beyond the first few months?

I am sure there are many answers to the question, and I would love to hear what you have to say on the subject.

But, based on my own experineces, I feel that one of the answers to the question is : Organization!

How do you keep track?

There are millions of blogs in the blogosphere. It is impossible to manually keep a track of all of them, not that there is any reason for you to keep a track of all of them…unless, of course, you are Technorati.

Yet, in your travels across the blogosphere, I am sure, you must have come across blogs that you liked. You feel that you would like to come back to the blog another time and read the latest that the blogger has to offer. What do you do?

Subscribe to the RSS feed : One of the easiest way to keep track of a blog is to subscribe to it’s RSS feed. These days almost every blog has one. If a blog does not have one, more likely than not, it will not be a blog that you would want to keep track of.

The problem here lies in choosing a suitable feed reader. I have not yet been able to decide on the best tool to be used to aggregate feeds from various blogs.
Which one do you use, and what do you like, or not like about it?

Favorite, or bookmark it : Another way to keep track of a blog is to add it to your favorites or your bookmarks. But, I feel that this method becomes unwieldy as the number of blogs you have bookmarked increased. I don’t usually bookmark or favourite blogs, but I think this method also does not tell you when a blog has been updated.

Blogroll it : Another traditional method is to create a blogroll where you can add the blogs you like, and visit them at your leisure. If a blog stops updating, or starts posting about things that do not interest you, it can be taken off the blogroll and in it’s place you can add any other blog that you might have taken a fancy to.

Remember it : The last, and I am sure the least preferred, way is to simply remember a blog’s URL and visit it whenever you want. This is, of course, is not an easy way.

How do you keep track of your favorite blogs? Do you use one of the above methods? If yes, then which one do you prefer over others? If no, then what other method do you use?

What is your Comment Policy?

Comments are one of the most important part of any blog. For a growing blog, comments are like water that helps a sapling to grow into a majestic tree. Comments are also a unique feature of the blogs, and the real time interaction, between the blogger and the visitor, that comments facilitate, I think, is one of the major reasons for the popularity of the blogs.

How a blogger manages the comments can either encourage, or discourage, a visitor to leave a comment or not.

The first question, then, is : Is it a good idea to moderate comments?

I don’t think it is, because when I comment on a blog it satisfies me immensely to see my comment get posted immediately. But, then, as experience has taught me, there are a few people out there who can leave comments that you would rather not have on your blog. So, choosing to moderate comments is like choosing the lesser of the two evils.

The next question: How do you respond to a comment?

The easiest and the best way, they tell me,  is to respond to it in your comment section and to go back to the commenter’s blog and leave a comment there. But, for some reason, I feel that commenting in my own comment section may seem to some as an attempt to artificially inflate the comment count. It is dificult to please all, isn’t it?

But, from now, I have decided to change that, and I am going to be responding to the comments in the comment section itself. And, I am going to try and comment on most blogs that comment here.

That last part raises a question in my mind that I hope some of you can answer for me. When you leave a comment on someone’s blog, do you check back to see if the blogger has responded to it?

Also, do you have a comment policy? If yes, what is it?

A Global English

Thanks to the Internet, English has become one of the most written, if not spoken, language in the world. And from the way things are going it can be safely assumed that the use of English is only going to increase in the years to come.

A few years ago, there were only two major varieties of English – the British  and the  American. Given the fact that most of the world has been a British colony at some point of time or another, it is not surprising that countries like India, south Africa etc. were predominantly using British English, and occasionally spicing it up with bits and pieces of the native language.

Thus, in addition to the two major varieties of English, a few other variants began to develop. But, then came computers, and the Internet, and things changed altogether.

One or many…Many or one?

One or MAny

This is one question that almost every blogger comes across as soon as the first blog is a few months old. The reason for starting a new blog could be a new idea that or a newly registered domain name.

But, I often wonder if it is a good idea to have many blogs or should a blogger restrict him/herself to just one blog.

I faced the question for the first time when I decided to have a blog on my own domain. At that time the question I faced was : should I move my existing blog from blogger to here, or should I start a new one? After deliberating on the question for a while, I finally chose to start a new blog, and keep the old one too.

Now, almost an year into my new blog, I think I have an answer to the “many or one” question.
